 | Yea I watched Norms for awhile I knew I would never buy anything things there myself. When Joe Bonomassa is there regularly discussing top tier products at top tier prices. I'm in San Diego we got a number of great pawn shops with vintage products at better pricing. One guy as a comparison brings up Norms up on his computer and shows you his price is better. And it usually is a fair price he doesn't have a web page and if you frequent his business he gives you steeper discounts, he has a large separate storage place with lots of inventory from drums keyboard amps he also has amps in need of repair that are vintage that he bought back in the day if you got some tech bench electronics skills those are great deals. But I mean this giy has Hammonds Fender Rhoads PA systems older recording equipment the other pawn shops are on the same road El Cajon Blvd just down the road one in both directions actually. I like pawn shops I have. Boughy a few more guitars zi didn't like,, like in Craigslist or other personal references and the pawn guys are willing to pat more thrn the local GC I stay as far a way as possible from there. If you were gonna build a studio and desire 70's and 80' used equipment those guy here in San Diego would be tuff to beat the 3 places in College Heights are probably the best, the guy in El Cajom has a big tool business buy has guitars and amps mostly the lower tier if the 3 I have dealt with but they all buy and the biggest guy actually like zi said if you frequent his place he also gives a few more bucks when swelling he moves more products bigger s4lectio. Thrn thruster 2. They have other sides yo there business hecus only music instruments I know all 3 owners and they all know each other and will refer you to each other as well because they hate GC rather g8ve another pawn guy some business then GC. I would never pay more for it because he's has outrageous inventory.. certainly like NAPA auto parts in the sense you pay a premium because THEY HAVE IT IN STOCK. A guitar you really want that's hard to find seem to feel better to me if you take time to find it, hunting it, going through other guitars of the same model that you have to just to get that one you want. Going to Norms is like paying extra to a exotic farm to hunt exotic animals just because it's gonna be there waiting??.. a Rhino in a fence?Kinda takes the sportsmanship out of actually hunting.. (ld never hunt an animal, just a comparison but a guitar? You bet!) No..Norm can keep his guitar farm.. lm happy he's making a killing, has tons of famous people (usually the type that would rather do the animal in a cage thing rather than actually hunt) he has a great life.. lt would mean much more to me to find a rare guitar l really wanted for sale at a odd ball pawnshop or online seller or best yet WORD OF MOUTH that a friend of a friends Dad left him this "you fill the blank" and he wants to sell it.. sure it takes time to locate what it is you want but YOU HUNTED FOR IT! Not a guy that marks it up double because HE HAS it in stock.. don't get me wrong..ld love to go in Norms just to see exotic crazy guitars l have never seen before or will ever again.. like a museum..no chance l would want to spend crazy money just to have it NOW and to say "l bought it at Norms" that to me would be about as embarrassing as bragging about the lion head over my mantle that l shot while caged!.  | wow....some of the ignorant comments on Norm are just disgusting....from people who've NEVER been in his shop and whove NEVER dealt with him....its sad. I met him....in 1990....and id just bought a 1962 Barney Kessell 'jazz box' from 'Fancy Music' in Santa Barbara i think?.... Norm asked if it had the 'Badge'....it didnt....i didnt even know it was supposed to HAVE a 'badge'....it was a small but very cool custom mini plaque that attached to the trapeze tail piece. i had paid $2800. and didnt get the damn badge..... Norm said he had one in the back.....he asked if i wanted it...i said sure lets see it.... He brought it out and it was really cool....rosewood and plastic, black and white layered, like the pick guard, with Barney's name engraved on it. it really WAS the 'cherry on top'....i was afraid to ASK how much...cos it was a RARE piece.... Norm wanted $50....i couldnt get the money out fast enough.....and he was a SUPER NICE GUY.... So i bought a 4x12 vintage Marshall cab from him....and a little 15 watt 1x12 Marshall combo....and some other stuff.... ...and im a nobody.....of COURSE he's gonna cater to the celebrities when they come in....they have fans....people know 'em.... but when i was there HE catered to me like i was a big deal too..... You wanna know who WASNT a nice guy? at ALL?.... in fact a total DICK??? ....George Gruhn in Nashville.. ...EVERYTHING YOU HAVE....is junk.....EVERYTHING HE HAS....is WAYYY overpriced and rare and special. He wants you to KISS HIS RING.....AND his fat ass.....it's ALL about the money and HIS ego...... I even got into his 'special room' in the old shop, and got to play HIS "celebrity guitars'....which were outrageously priced- (even back then when '50's sunbursts were commonly in the $20 to 25K range, sometimes $19K !!!!...within 5 years they were up to about $100K). But he 'poo poo'ed' the bursts in favor of the 1917 Loyd Loar F-5 Mandolins...cos THEY were up to $25K at the time....cos its all about PROFIT, silly.....NOT music..... I got the impression, that even though he was older and from a different era, that Norm was more into the music. ..Gruhn was more into his snakes....go figure. i MAY be a little 'off' on the market figures ....its been a while....but as memory serves i think its correct.  | When I was a 15 year old kid, I went to Norm's Rare guitars when it was in its original location to buy my first real electric guitar. This was literally 40 years ago. I will never forget this moment as it was a dose of real life for a young person who still thought adults would never think to take advantage of a child who clearly could be easily fooled into paying for something that wasn't worth close to what he was charging. Anyway, I bought an old firebird from him. Played great in the store. Got it home, the electronics were junk. Had all sorts of bad wiring and glitches. Took it back and he kindly traded it in on an old Les Paul, for which I had to pay a substantial additional fee. That turned out to be full of problems as well. When I went back for some help in getting it to play right, they couldn't be bothered. This is what Norm was like then. I suspect he's not changed much as I've listened to people who have been there and tried to make deals on instruments. It's a shame, really. Guitars were meant to be played and enjoyed. But this is America. Land of the free. Norman can do whatever the "F" he wants with his hundreds of rare guitars. Hopefully he doesn't prey on 15 year old kids any more.  | I love my SG Deluxe, all the bling and NO trapazoid inlays. I upgraded to a roller bridge and sealed bearing bar on the Bigsby. It really sings. Got it from MF for $1600.00 a few years ago.  | I went to Norm's for my first time when I was visiting LA back in November , and I tried that same SGII (mini-humbuckers?). It was very clean and played really well . I was not familiar with that model, so I passed and bought another guitar. The comments below seem to throw a lot of shade at Norms, but they were really great and me and my 2 buddies were allowed to grab and play anything we wanted....even the backroom stuff if we wished...which is why I don't buy guitars on-line. I need to hear them and feel them since I play them (not a collector). Aside: I bumped into Tim Pierce while I was there, so was a really cool crossing of the real world and the Youtube world.
