Boutique concept does not work. Like the Microsoft store, has anyone ever bought there? With power of smartphones and google every smart consumer will figure out where and best price. Two outcome brands must consider...close all ADs and sell at MSRP or close all boutiques let ADs compete. It’s a mix now so what happens is Boutique at full prices sells 1% ADs and grey sell 99%.... I don’t pay full price on anything....ok maybe Rolex if I’m desperate maybe not

This is a pedestrian analysis just looking at one market, watches, but even there you don’t really understand the dynamics involved. Luxury brands need brick and mortar, because it’s more than just a product they’re buying, it’s also an experience they’re buying. The luxury buyer doesn’t buy used/second-hand. They go into the boutique for the product and the experience of buying that product. You will never get the second half of that from online, never.
You’re conflating too many different things at one time and your lack of clear thought comes out in your explanation. It wonders and rambles. Sorry to be harsh but it was frustrating listening to it and trying to follow your reasoning. You’re conflating a luxury buyer with a flipper and a flipper with an enthusiast. All have different reasons for buying and expect different outcomes. Luxury buyer wants the experience, flipper wants a profit, and an enthusiast just wants the product.
Amazon didn’t kill brick and mortar.
You think this situation doesn’t exist in other markets? Their situation and outcomes are the same. Try buying a luxury purse, like Louis Vuitton. I wanted to get one for my daughter for her b-day. Guess what? Certain model are impossible to get (in the boutique), and sell online used/grey market for well above retail. Sound familiar?
Louis Vuitton’s boutique was packed when I went but they sell online too. It’s because the boutique provides the buying the experience. I have the pictures of my daughter getting that experience and it wasn’t negatively affected by getting the “Alma BB” instead of the “Favorite PM”.
At the end of this lockdown there will still be boutiques, there will be AD’s and there will be pre-owned dealers, as there were before. Availability and pricing issues will be there as well. They may fluctuate but the dynamics won’t. Don’t conflate the different scenarios. Preferred customers walking in to the boutique will get what they want, flippers will still operate online, enthusiasts will get what they are looking for if they can afford to pay the aftermarket price.

People are staying at home enjoying locktails and quarantinis and buying online. Brick and mortar AD stores will need to do some serious discounting to attract customers back when so much is available online. I was in a large (partly opened) shopping mall earlier today and the watch shops were empty. Purchasing behaviors have changed because of the batwuflu lockdown.

I haven’t had a good experience with an AD for over 10 years. It’s over red rover for them. I bought a Daytona recently from a grey market dealer during this virus happening. The supply of Rolex is high (like at Chrono 24). Watch industry is going to
get decimated. When the tide goes down all the boats go down. Jomashop Rules

If the manufacturers take their money and allow the AD retailers to set their own prices, sales will increase as will their profits. It has been demonstrated in other industries. The one area where this is not so is for businesses which are incapable of increasing production to meet such increases in demand.

I have nothing against buying online but for me it is the amount that I intend to spend that decide if I will go online to buy the watch. I am fine to spend 1-2k online but to drop 5k, I would want to try the watch and to enjoy the AD or boutique services.
Комментарий от : @pth8888

@jhudiel999
AD’s might die in the US but speaking from my experience in countries in South east Asia specifically people still want to go to a store and try on a watch because theres still this distrust on online purchases and delivery. We still have to think about numerous high level fakes built here or china and shady online dealer stories. For example my dad when buying a watch when we went to japan kept asking me, how are we sure they arent fakes? Is it really okay to buy pre owned? Maybe its a culture difference

@mohamedalketbi2326
Let’s be honest . I was welling to get VC American 1921 in Dubai VC boutique but it turns out the price is too high compared to for example HODINKEE online prices for VC , I think the price in boutique cover security , staff and renting expenses in addition of profit , so I am too convinced to buy online specially in second hand market since the prices are good and reasonable. Same goes to Breguet , lange and blancpain as examples. Boutiques and stores do have a pleasure of seeing actual physical aspect of the watch, but online can save cost as well for the company.

While I think you could be right, I think it is also convenient for you to say that rolex/patek shortages will persist, especially even more so now. That makes people turn to dealers (you). A lot of ADs have been calling customers and offering rolex SS pieces. I think any shortage in supply will be minimal compared to the shortage in demand.

You are great. I hope you recover soon.
I do disagree with you, I think Rolex authorized dealers will have a bunch of inventory because they probably had a bunch already hidden away in some secret stash and will be getting more from Rolex. And Rolex probably has a bunch of inventory stockpiled from before this crisis happened.

As you stated companies will need revenue due to this pandemic, Rolex is no different, they make money by selling watches generally speaking. To think that Rolex did not lose money during this time, that’s just not be realistic.rolex will need to catch up with lost revenue. I’m going to go against the grain, I think Rolex open the floodgates and flood the market.

Here’s some spin on the Rolex market. What if Rolex did not come out with the new models this year because they don’t have the current inventory and supply chain to support the new models. they may want to catch up with revenue? They have all their old inventory and parts. they know it will work just fine with no bugs and additional training.
Simply mass produce this year to increase revenue and knowing that the demand is high now. Cashing this year because the forecast moving forward is very uncertain.
Only time will tell.

@btb44333ify
Referencing a bottom tier brand like Breitling, who has been on the ropes for years and depends on things like cruise ship gift shops, isn't a very valid general case. Real luxury goods tend to take a smaller hit and recover more quickly than most other segments. Will folks who've been on the edge not make it through? Of course. But there's a massive pent up urge to buy. Look at Hermes after Beijing reopened - biggest single day ever.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if the next few months turn out to be a great time to buy used pieces, as folks who stretched to buy something they probably shouldn't have in the first place rush to sell to generate cash. Smart and responsible people who have 12+ months reserve before doing something frivolous like buying a luxury good will be fine.

Personally, unless it's a special piece that's no longer in production (like an original Genta) I consider used pieces like used underwear. Rather disgusting, really.

@travelandwatches8
I disagree with you. There are AD who sells to grey market dealers, so there are sports watches on stock somewhere. Also, as the AD have been closed for up to 2 months now, as well as some grey market dealers with little to no online sales, they too are in need of cash. I am not talking about the pre-owned used market. There I predict that prices will drop a little depending on how well we get out of this financially.

@TheSwedishRider
I'm not in the watch industry, so you might have more information than I do, but I don't think that Rolex will have to hire many people after the crisis, especially not in the production. It's not how it works in Europe. They know rehiring and training cost a lot of money as well and will lead to flaws. Plus, Switzerland is small, slow and disciplined, their corona crisis will be much shorter than in the US.

@robertschmidt9584
I’ve moved beyond the retail or even. boutique experience for timepieces. However, if I’m going buy a new watch over $10k, I prefer to still see it in person and get a feel on the wrist before purchasing it. Pre-owned, mail/packages are fine so long as the dealer is reputable and stands behind their product.

@birajudoshi3463
that interesting John

so how would Rolex (which produces watches in large quantities and still maintains exclusivity) sell it online or just boutiques from your perspective, how would you buy SS Daytona online? I can understand some smaller brands can probably by limiting the number of watches they are selling, as soon as they "drop" they sell out...sure but Rolex..? I am sure Rolex is trying to figure it out too, because most customers who end up getting these SS models are loyal to AD not the brand and Rolex would obviously want loyalty to the brand not be used as very valualbe thank you gifts by ADs.

Not sure if you saw the vlog by Revolution zooming in with Aurel Bacs, speaking about auctions online, while that's a component of business that is growing I dont believe traditional way will go out anytime soon because how do you solve above question?

It seems like u guys are hoping to become a dealer in some way it seems....less brand new watches due to no AD and other retail channels, how and where will u guys get ur supply...pre-owned is dependent on guys having to buy a new watch previously...personally i wouldn't buy a brand new watch online while I am happy to buy pre-owned online...and the funny thing is because of price but because of authenticity and the experience....

Agree .. I don’t think models will be widely available at the outset . However I would predict that 12 months from now once Rolex have made up to a degree production lost during the pandemic watch availability will be much better . The full impact of the worldwide economic crisis will really start to kick in in the months to come and sadly the serious affects will be felt for many years to come . Available will probably be similar to 5 years ago . I feel that perhaps you won’t see the Most popular models in ADS windows but they will probably be attainable in reasonable timescales ..

@Jnjcpltest1
To alleviate the confusion, if you're talking here about brick and mortar brand boutiques, except for the bigger names they'll always be opening and closing (see Panerai and IWC situations). Now Multi-brand ADs, there has always been a situation where the most established ones are not bulging and the small ones are opening and closing as well. What's likely to happen is, just like in any crisis, the less viable ones will die (either outright or be bought back by groups) and the most robust ones will survive. I agree with you that small ones that are not adapting to the times (going online, selling pre-owned) are more subject to dying but I don't think it means the end of ADs, on the contrary I think it's going to mean the rise of multi-brands ADs that are part of a group. For the Rolex availablity, as stated in the comments, while they won't be available straight away because of the factory closing, I'm also pretty sure that waiting lists for the most sought after models are getting smaller because a lot of people got hit by the crisis so you're probably in a better place trying to get one at retail with a shortenned lead time than before thanks to this (only if your AD is still in business after this crisis). Lastly, look at the big brands, they're all online now and offering you online shops to buy directly from them. Rolex doesn't but JLC, Omega, Cartier, Panerai do it. You even have smaller brands on the rise like NOMOS offering their customers a payment by installment to allow them to get their watches.

But in both cases “I” thought that the value justified the purchase and in all cases have been pleased. John, thanks for the video. You are right. I dont think AD can survive with just selling brand new watch. My suggestion for them is to start offering door to door service again like old times. Show the watch at customer home or office. Retail mall will be a history as no one will go to mall or boutique anymore.. Yes we need internet, but buying a watch is all about wearing it on the wrist. Ppl like Panda Daytona but does it really looks good on our own wrist? Only we will know it when we wear it. The business model need a change, just like tailor, they can go to your office to provide their bespoke service. So AD need to let go their ego or tradition, go to their customer instead of the other way round.

@gary-pv8vz
Doesn’t the ‘luxury’ experience start with walking into the AD / boutique and being made to feel like a million dollars? How could that experience be translated into the online environment?

Now, as long as I believe I am getting value for my money I’m not too concerned about cost. However, in the online market I’m solely responsible for identifying and getting the Q&A, there is no guidance or expertise other than my own involved in the purchase. There is no tactile experience. So, why should I be expected to pay the full AD RRP? There is no bricks and mortar store, no-one offering me a cup of coffee and a cookie, nothing. Shouldn’t I benefit from the reduction in costs for that sale? And if I was to benefit what’s to stop me visiting an AD and getting the million dollar feeling, coffee and cookies and then ordering online?

Now, if I was an AD it sucks even more. I’m not only competing against other ADs I’m competing against my supplier. How can that be a level playing field?

So, I guess the solution is not to be an AD?

I think the future is boutiques (owned by the brands) where you can try a watch on, and buy it at retail (or order online). Rare models, say a Daytona, will be a lottery or similar, no more of the buy crap to get quality (or, if they keep that, maybe a clear dollar value thats transparent to get the reward to buy something special). At least the brands can eliminate the grey market then and they get all the retail price without giving up 40 percent or more to the AD.
